Susan married Andrew Martin, a member of the Texas A&M Corps of Cadets, at the home of her father Joseph J. Calvey Sr., February 2, 2007. The marriage was performed by Father John "Jack" O'Donoghue of Blessed Sacrament Church of San Antonio, the church where these two wonderful kids met five years earlier. The The wedding was a dream come true in many ways and so bittersweet in so many other ways. Susan would leave this life behind just 12 short days later on St. Valentines Day.
Being Mr. and Mrs. Andrew Martin was important to both Andrew and Susan. As Susan said just days before getting married, "I don't want just a wedding, I want a marriage." Staying by her side Andrew and all of Susan's family clung to the hope of a miracle that would reverse the ravages of a primary cancer unknown to the doctors.
Susan picked a wonderful young man to marry. Not many men would stand as tall as Andrew did, taking vows with such a heavy heart. The kids had talked of eloping years before when they were starting off at Texas A&M. They were truly in love. There is no doubt that had the course of their lives been different they would have spent many decades together as man and wife, so strong was their bond.
On their wedding day the house was packed with friends and family in every hallway, every room. As Susan lay in her bed unable to leave for the church as her body failed her, she was dressed in a beautiful wedding gown. Her spirit and her will to live filled the home with hope as the San Antonio Pipe and Drum Corps led by Harrell and Nell Sutherland burst into the Aggie War Hymn. These two Aggies were not about to go quietly into the night. And neither were their guests who burst into applause after Father Jack proudly said " I now pronounce you man and wife". Andrew needed no further instruction as he kissed his bride.
